Dr. Chen graduated cum laude from the UCLA School of Dentistry, and did his residency in periodontics there, as well. He holds an undergraduate degree in microbiology and molecular genetics.

His research interests have included wound healing and the role of insulin-like growth factors on the cells that play an important role in creating hard material covering the roots of teeth.

Dr. Chen is a member of the American Academy of Periodontology and the California Society of Periodontists. During his time at UCLA, he served as Director of the UCLA Asian Dental Free Clinic. He is currently a lecturer at UCLA School of Dentistry and a supervising dentist at the Pasadena City College Dental Hygiene.
